Reflections on Border Battle 2K13 - Part 4

RT5

The RT5 division certainly saw some changes in the standings following the Border Battle event! Perhaps most notably, Petrolia Pirates lost their match against Keswick Bombers causing them to drop from their 1st place position. Pirates will have the opportunity to redeem themselves next event as they face Ajax Lockdown and Churchill Venom. Also point-worthy, Vanier Outbreak developed a winning streak which they maintained throughout the entire second event, allowing them to steal into the coveted lead. With their hard work and vigorous practices, I won’t be surprised to see this streak continue. It will not be an easy feat though as they have yet to face the 3rd and 5th place teams (Codrington Chaos and Mount Hope Bedlam) who both have some wins under their belts as well! Keswick Bombers’ successful matches allowed them to match Codrington Chaos in wins, losses, and ties, as well as in +/- meaning the two teams are currently tied for 3rd in the season standings. It will be interesting to see who pulls out ahead in their match against one another at Event 3!

CX4
Hamilton Havoc won Event 2 bringing their point total up to 96 which also means they are now the CX4 leaders heading into Event 3. Brantford Painting Crew finished toward the middle of the pack this event, knocking them out of 1st and into 3rd overall. North York Thrash has demonstrated consistency this season, finishing both Events 1 and 2 in 3rd place which has allowed them to lock down the 2nd spot in the rankings. As for the lower end of the CX4 ranks, Barrhaven Hustle Ninjas failed to field a team this event which may have been a pleasant surprise for Wawa Warthogs who were able to move up a spot in the ranks.

Reflections on Border Battle 2K13 - Part 3

RXL
The RXL division switched things up a bit at Border Battle with an exciting mix of close matches and stomp shows. The top teams have maintained their positions while the bottom teams have shifted slightly. It will be interesting to see if there are any upsets at Event 3 as the season draws to a close and teams look forward to NAX.

Most Surprising Game – Essex Distortion VS. Guelph Silence

After last event, Essex was tied for the lead in the RXL division with Silence rounding out the bottom of the pack. While I thought for certain that Guelph would come out strong this event, I didn’t expect this match to be such a close one. Silence is after all the only team to have lost to Vaughn in the 2013 season. Additionally, Distortion had already had one tight match against Rampage earlier in the day which should have added fuel to their fire. Either way, this game was surprisingly close with a final score of 8-7 for distortion.

Strongest Team at this Event – Joyceville Hustlers

I wouldn’t say that Hustlers came out overwhelmingly strong this event, stomping teams like they did at Event 1. However, they pulled out wins against Demolition and Beast Mode, proving they still belong at the top of the RXL standings. Joyceville will have the absolute pleasure of facing off against 420 Army and Vaughn Vipers at Event 3 where I suspect we will see them stepping up their game just for the fun of boosting their +/- to secure their position as 1st in the central division before heading into NAX!

Weakest Team at this Event – Vaughn Vipers

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that Vipers have found their way to the bottom of the RXL barrel as this was their position throughout the entire 2012 season. However, I did expect more from them this year – especially considering the amount of experienced players added to their roster this year. It seems the ridiculous amount of penalties Vipers have taken is a little counter-productive to winning. Who would’ve guessed?

Team to watch out for at Event 3 – Niagara Rampage and Brockville BeastMode

Ahem. Can I take a second to give myself a little pat on the back? I told you all that Rampage would be your team to watch at Border Battle and these boys did not disappoint! First of all, they didn’t just win against Vaughn Vipers, they squashed them like a little bug with an 11-0 win! Then they proceeded to give Distortion a run for their money coming out of that match down by 1 point in Essex’s tight 6-5 win. Niagara is on what I’d like to call…wait for it…a RAMPAGE!

   BeastMode VS. Vipers

BeastMode has been quietly sitting on the bubble all season long. These guys have only lost to the top two teams in the RXL division and have taken some close wins over Silence and 420 Army. It looks like they are getting bored of being quiet though as they certainly made some noise when they beat the King City Royals 12-4 at Border Battle. I won’t be surprised to see them feast on Vipers at Event 3 but their match against Niagara will be worth the watch!

Team to Most Surpass Expectations – Guelph Silence

Guelph’s losses at Event 1 were not enough to leave this team feeling defeated and ready to give up. Instead, Silence came back at Border Battle and brought with them their a-game. In their match over the King City Royals, Silence was silent no more! The Guelph group gave the Royals a good old fashioned beating with a 13-4 win and then went on to put up a solid fight against Distortion. I expected Guelph to bring a little more gusto to Event 2, but they truly outdid themselves! I do suspect that they will be playing for a win against 420 Army at Event 3 but Niagara will be a very challenging match for them. Who knows, maybe they will continue to surpass expectation!

P.S.  My RXL predictions were pretty accurate. 8 for 8 in terms of wins and losses - although, the point spreads were not quite what I imagined!

Reflections on Border Battle 2K13 - Part 2

MXL

Most Exciting Game –Mississauga Hate VS. Huntsville Predators

  Predators
If you’ve been following the MXL division this season, you know that prior to this match, these two teams were tied in points near the top of the standings. There was never any doubt that this would be a pressure-filled match with both teams eagerly eying the win. Both teams have a mix of up-and-coming players and CXBL retirees. They must be well-matched competitors because the first point of the match was a long one, lasting nearly 7 minutes, with Huntsville hanging the flag. From there, the teams went back and forth, each securing some points (and some minor penalties). Toward the end of the half, Predators made a move and wrestled in a quick few points leaving the score at 5-2. Hate must’ve had a “team talk” that managed to bring their heads back into the game because they came out and took the first 3 points of the second half, tying up the match. With dominance switching back and forth for the last few minutes of the game, Predators managed to come out ahead as the match finished at a predictably close 7-6.

Most Surprising Game – Sarnia Sabres VS. St. Catherines Savages

I must admit I had almost given up on Sarnia after event 1. I predicted that they would be one of the strongest MXL teams due largely to their CXBL-stacked roster. Many of these guys played for Scarborough Hustle before the team was relegated at the end of the 2012 season and while they were never super strong in the CXBL bracket, I figured that they would be right at home in the MXL division. After seeing them suffer a significant 10 point loss to Brooklin Mafia and then a loss to Mississauga Hate, I started to wonder if they might be following in the shoes of Woodstock Semper Fi.

 Savages

St. Catherines, while still suffering losses at Event 1, had lesser point spreads against some highly competitive teams. They demonstrated a drive that had me rooting for them during this match. My mistake, perhaps, was giving up on Sabres too soon. Maybe, they knew that they needed to step things up and prove themselves this event and put in the necessary time and energy practicing. Whatever the reason, it was Sarnia who came out with a lead after a fairly back-and-forth first half. With a score of 4-3 with 12 minutes remaining, Sabres went to work to secure their lead, widening the gap to 7-3. With less than 2 minutes on the clock, Savages managed to secure what some may have predicted would be the last point of the match. However, St. Catherines suffered a major penalty with only 9 seconds left in the game thus handing their competitors another point bringing the final score to 8-4 Sabres.

Most Impressive Team at this Event – Huntsville Predators

 Huntsville Predators

Huntsville enjoyed some close wins over two strong teams, Mississauga Hate and Milton Mutiny. They have now matched the leading Brooklin Mafia in terms of points and will have the pleasure of facing their most skilled competitors next event! This team certainly has the right ingredients for a win, the question is, will they pull it off?

Weakest Team at this Event – Georgina Grizzlies

It’s pretty weak to bail on an event. It’s pretty weak to make other teams fork out a lot of money on gas, hotels, etc. in anticipation of a match that you have no intention of playing. Enjoy your bans, Georgina, you certainly earned them for your lack of decency.

Team to Watch out for at Event 3 and Team to Most Surpass Expectations – Milton Mutiny

   Mutiny
Well, clearly I didn’t take a close enough look at Mutiny’s roster changes before formulating my predictions for Border Battle. They picked up Shayne Salmon, a familiar face, who did plenty of work on the 2012 Medonte squad and Alex Lyness, also from last season’s Ntwo.  This team suffered a painful loss to Brooklin Mafia at Event one which led me to underestimate them. Their other losses to Sabres and Predators were by a much smaller point spread which suggests that they are adapting to the playing styles of theoretically much stronger teams. Additionally, Mutiny stormed into Border Battle, showing Hooligans that they know how to play this game! Milton’s passionate up-and-comers paired with the experience of their past Elite players will allow them to continue to build momentum as they prepare for event 3.

Penalty Minutes

As it turns out, the MXL division is rocking the penalties. Interesting that the teams leading the pack have the least penalty minutes…coincidence? I think not. In order from most penalty minutes to least, here are your MXL teams!

1.       Milton Mutiny
Games Played: 4
Penalty Minutes: 48

2.       Georgina Grizzlies
Games Played: 3 (before their season ended)
Penalty Minutes:  43

3.       St. Catherines Savages
Games Played: 4
Penalty Minutes: 40

4.       Sarnia Sabres
Games Played: 5
Penalty Minutes: 40

5.       Hespeler Hooligans
Games Played: 4
Penalty Minutes: 35

6.       Mississauga Hate
Games Played: 5
Penalty Minutes: 32

7.       Huntsville Predators
Games Played: 5
Penalty Minutes: 27

8.       Brooklin Mafia
Games Played: 4
Penalty Minutes: 26

A little interesting fact…last year after Border Battle it was Brooklin Fingers and Waterloo Wolves with the least penalty minutes. Do I spot a trend?

Signing off,
The Paintball Wife

P.S. Considering Georgina didn’t show, I basically went 2 and 2 for my MXL predictions. That’s a pretty poor prediction percentage! Thanks for stirring things up, guys! :P

Reflections on Border Battle 2K13 - Part 1

As usual, the Border Battle event at Commando Paintball was a massive success with the talented Elite teams filling the bleachers all weekend long. It came as no surprise that fans witnessed match after match of adrenaline-filled excitement. Surprisingly, there were very few “close” matches! In fact, six of the ten matches had a point spread of 5 or higher! Considering there is not a player out there who likes to lose – especially by a significant spread - we can expect to see some roster changes and added practice as the Elite teams prepare for their next event!

With no further ado, here are my reflections from the first Elite event of the 2013 season.

CXBL Elite

Most Exciting Game to Watch – Montreal Heat VS. Windsor Lockdown

I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I was to see this match played out. Anyone could tell you that Heat’s pros versus Lockdown’s mash up of Ontario’s best and a handful of Damage and Ironmen players would be a game well worth the watch. But how many of you would have predicted Lockdown’s locals with a solid win here? I certainly didn’t. In fact, I had Heat pegged as the winners of this match even assuming Lockdown had their full line-up of players present. Boy did they prove me wrong!

Due to some flight difficulties, it was only Damage’s Chad Busiere who was able to join the local Lockdown heroes for this challenging match up but that didn’t dampen Windsor’s spirit. To the contrary, Lockdown took the first four points of the match with little contention from Heat. Then making the most of some minor penalties acquired by the Lockdown squad, Heat bullied back bringing the score to a close 5-4. With only a second to spare, Lockdown’s Drew Guppy managed a flag hang boosting Windsor’s lead to 6-4 going into the second half of this exciting match. To be honest, I expected this match to carry on from half in a point-for-point fashion as is typical when evenly matched teams go head to head. Instead, the well-practiced Windsor locals with the help of Busiere managed to maintain and build on their lead finishing the match with a surprising 11-6 lead. That’s pretty impressive considering they only had 7 players at the ready. It just goes to show how valuable practice and determination really are!

Most Surprising Game – Fredericton Aggression Vs. London Vicious

If you are a die-hard Vicious fan, perhaps you expected this 8 point victory over Aggression but I certainly did not. While I had London picked as the winners for this match, I saw these two teams as fairly level competition and thus was surprised to see the point spread rapidly widen during the second half! London was leading 5-3 at the start of the second half and went on to take four points in a consistent pattern of 2-3 minute intervals. After conceding 1 point to Fredericton, Vicious proceeded to win the final 3 points of the match, finishing with a final score of 12-4.

I happen to know that Vicious was not happy after their narrow win over Kitchener Recon and the word on the street is that they spent hours Saturday night discussing breakouts and ways to improve on their playing style. Their meeting proved worthwhile as they came out with a confident win over Aggression. That being said, I must admit that I don’t feel Fredericton lived up to their potential at this event. It could be that they were missing the talents of Alex Borromeo and Mason Hwu (and last minute addition – Dave Bains) or it could be that running one line of players over and over wears on you! Either way, I fully expect a stronger Aggression at the next Elite event!

Most Impressive Team at this Event – Windsor Lockdown

I truly expected to be commenting that Montreal Heat was the most impressive team at the first Elite event. Their consistent line-up and multitude of experiences in the PSP, Millennium and CXBL suggest that they have a depth of skill and adaptability that many other teams are lacking.  While they certainly lived up to expectation in their other matches against Rockstar and Vicious, Heat dropped the ball in their game against Lockdown – allowing Windsor to take the coveted lead position. I personally was expecting Windsor to have a challenging time gelling as a team considering they have such a mash up of very strong competitors. I worried that the local guys (Szypka, Guppy, Ing, Kropf, and Fare) who have been consistently competing at the top of the CXBL for years would be wasting away in the pits while their skilled professional talent (Busiere, Edwards, Brown, Margott, and Goldman) would be playing point after point all weekend long. Thankfully, the team came together on the field (and off) and the results were impressive. They went on to win all 3 of their matches with a consistency that few others demonstrated this first event. In fact, Windsor is currently leading the Elite teams with an astounding +/- of 39! That being said, they have yet to face London Vicious and Fredericton Aggression who are also shaping up to be very strong, determined competitors. I don’t know about you, but I have renewed faith that this team has what it takes to be battling for rings this year!

Weakest Team Thus Far-Toronto Rockstar

Toronto Rockstar had arguably the most challenging event a team could have in terms of competition. They faced off against the two leading teams, Windsor Lockdown and Montreal Heat and predictably succumbed to some hefty losses. Both Heat and Lockdown pulled out 12 point spreads in their wins over Toronto. To add insult to injury, Rockstar took more penalties than they did points this event (6 penalties, 5 points). That being said, any team can have a bad event and Toronto will have the opportunity to come back strong at Elite event 2. While they still have some grueling matches ahead (Aggression and Vicious), they also face the more equal talents of Kitchener Recon and Drummondville Daytona. It’s time to practice hard Rockstar, only one team will be sitting out of NAX this year and I have a feeling you don’t want to fill that spot.

Teams to Watch out for at Elite Event 2 – Any and all.

With only 2 Elite events leading up to the excitement of NAX, all teams have to step it up for the next event! There simply isn’t time to waste in the race for rings. We can expect some exciting matches between some of the top teams  - with Heat facing off against Aggression and Lockdown facing both Aggression and Vicious! Additionally, the Rockstar-Recon match could potentially be the determining factor for that final NAX position unless either team can come up with a big win early on!

Team to most Surpass Expectations – Drummondville Daytona

I am feeling some déjà vu as I write that Drummondville surpassed expectation as this is precisely the realization that I came to after Elite event 1 in the 2012 season! Though I was determined not to underestimate Daytona’s skill, I was still surprised by their win over Kitchener Recon.  While I predicted that the Recon-Daytona match would be a close one, I truly expected Kitchener to come out on top. This game was tied at half and then went point for point after that leading up to a flurry of action in the last seven minutes of the match. Drummondville did a fantastic job of mixing up their lines and their playing style and this aided them to their 10-9 win. Daytona’s past aggressive nature seemed tamed and their playing style more mature at this first event! For this reason, I tend to think they will earn themselves a NAX spot this year leaving Rockstar and Recon fighting against the NAX knockout.

A Quick Look at Penalty Minutes

Since it’s always fun to know who spends the most time in the penalty box, once again I’ve compiled stats on penalty minutes. Teams are listed from most penalty minutes to least! Penalties seem to be much more evenly spread this season!

1.       Drummondville Daytona
Games Played: 3
Penalty Minutes: 30

2.       Montreal Heat
Games Played: 3
Penalty Minutes: 21

3.       Toronto Rockstar
Games Played: 2
Penalty Minutes: 18

4.       London Vicious
Games Played: 3
Penalty Minutes: 17

5.       Kitchener Recon
Games Played: 3
Penalty Minutes: 15

6.       Windsor Lockdown
Games Played: 3
Penalty Minutes: 14

7.       Fredericton Aggression
Games Played: 3
Penalty Minutes: 13

The Paintball Wife

P.S. If you are keeping track, I went 8 for 10 in my predictions for Elite wins and losses. How did you do?
